Historical Sussex
The county of Sussex escaped the wholesale rearrangements of life and customs which the Viking invasions brought to much of England. As such the kingdom of South Saxons or Sussex was one of the original seven kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon England. With a reputation for an aversion to being pushed around, the people of Sussex have a strong vein of independence and respect for independence of other people. This can be seen in the challenges we face with the local planning departments; that our Architects Sussex team have good working relationships with Chichester, South Downs National Park, Horsham, Ardur, Waverley and Wealden District Council Planning Departments.
In terms of building styles, Sussex has significant historic buildings dating back to the Roman Villas of Fishbourne and Bignor; through the stunning Norman architecture of Battle Abbey and Chichester Cathedral to Nash’s regency architecture for King George IV’s Royal Pavilion in Brighton. The modernist gems of the 1935 De La Warr Pavillion in Bexhill on Sea and Powell & Moya’s 1962 Chichester Festival Theatre are note worthy. More recent Contemporary architectural gems include Hastings Contemporary East Beach Café, Pallant House Gallery and Ditchling Museum of Art & Craft.
Building With Local Materials
With over 20+ years of experience our Architects Sussex team have a wealth of expertise in designing homes. Our clients come to us if they have a listed building, are looking for a barn conversion or are wanting to build a completely new home as a replacement dwelling.
Our designs often use traditional local materials from the White Chalk as seen at Amberley Museum to the quarry flint such as The Old School House at Angmering and the historical walls of Chichester through to the Carstone which is evident in many Fittleworth cottages. James and his Sussex architect team are adept at incorporating tradition materials employed with a more contemporary aesthetic. We have a track record of refurbishing, refreshing and creating new build homes.
