New House West Sussex

Our award-winning West Sussex architects team were commissioned to replace this original 1920s four bedroom detached property with a carefully considered new house that responds to both its setting and the client’s evolving needs. The new build house was completed in Summer 2020, extending to approximately 3,400 square feet and providing six bedrooms alongside a generous provision of bathrooms, dressing rooms and flexible family living space designed for modern life.

Working closely with the client, our West Sussex architects developed a scheme that respects the character of the surrounding landscape while introducing a refined architectural language. Taking a cue from the established formal landscaped garden setting and inspired by Palladio’s Villa Poiana, the design adopts a half cube form, with elevations that vary in response to the orientation of the house and the changing quality of light throughout the day. The East and West facing elevations feature elegant Diocletian windows, lending rhythm and proportion to the composition.

The South elevation is carefully screened from the drive by lush, mature planting, creating a sense of arrival and privacy. This primary living space is articulated by a generously glazed projecting bay, which draws in natural light and opens views to the garden, with a covered balcony above providing a sheltered outdoor connection. The North elevation introduces a more playful and personal element, featuring a dramatic double-height stair window rigged and ready for the client’s spinning trapeze practice, adding a unique layer of character to the home.

“James’ design really made the most of the garden with the trapeze windows opening onto the original parterre garden. What I love about our new home is how the design literally brings the garden into the house.”
