New House, South Downs, Bignor

"This new house is a beautiful, elegant space. The brilliance of James’ designs is difficult to explain. It is like a stage set, the scale of the rooms, the generous height of the ceilings, the views – this feels like a space where good things will happen.”

Stuart McKenzie, CEO, Maynard Leigh Associates

Project Description:

The design of a replacement house in the South Downs National Park requires much thought and sensitivity. This new five bedroom home has adopted its downland setting in an unassuming manner.

Traditional forms of Sussex domestic architecture have been drawn together in careful composition to create a subtle design with understated contemporary detailing. Flintwork, handmade Danish brick and green oak structure are brought together under a natural slate roof. The ground floor is dominated by a calm open plan living space for relaxing and entertaining with separate rooms for music, work and media.

A comprehensive hard and soft landscaping scheme is a central component of the design, creating sheltered sun traps, and optimising views whilst softening the impact of the building through a series of outdoor rooms.

This project is Shortlisted for the Sussex Heritage Trust Awards, 2016
