The inspiration for this award winning 3 bed beach house in West Sussex was a picnic on the beach under a large sun-shade, and the iconic modern house designs of Rudolf Schindler and Richard Neutra in California in the 1920s and 1930s.
The steel frame with enhanced structural properties compared to traditional structure allows wide span openings, leading to one of the most celebrated features of this design being the folding glass walls that can be swept away to allow unobstructed views combined with a cool on-shore breeze,
Flush thresholds let the interior flow uninterrupted through the heart of the house, and the detail of door linings, architraves and skirtings has been carefully resolved and executed to keep every surface flush with the wall plane, resulting in a casually minimal design that eliminates much of the clutter of daily living. Natural materials complement the colours of the pebble beach, and the rest of the appearance is made by nature in the form of the soft garden landscape setting, including a small lawn, with trees and shrubs including a brick built boundary planter to contain and soften the outside garden space.
Pagham Beach House won a Civic Trust Award in 2003 and a Sussex Design and Sustainability Award in 2005.
