We are delighted that Duncan Hall has written about our Pagham Beach House in Sussex Life magazine in their June issue. Designed and built as a weekend retreat by James Wells, it draws inspiration from the Californian equivalents created by Craig Ellwood in the ’50s and ’60s, and the Mies van der Rohe 1929 Barcelona Pavilion – a building still studied by architectural students today.

When considering the joy of creating a new seaside home there is a longer list than normal of issues to think over when composing a design. In creating a beach house, beach house architects have more to play with in terms of natural light and spectacular views. At the same time, consideration has to be given to more hard-wearing weathering of materials and how the house will cope with extreme weather conditions.
