We are delighted that Duncan Hall has written about our Pagham Beach House in the June issue of Sussex Life magazine. Designed and built by James Wells as a weekend retreat, the house draws its inspiration from the Californian houses created by Craig Ellwood in the ’50s and ’60s, and from Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion of 1929, a building of such enduring influence that it is still studied by architectural students today.
When one considers the joy of creating a new seaside home, there is a rather longer list than usual of matters to think over when composing a design. In creating a beach house, beach house architects have a good deal more to play with in terms of natural light and spectacular, ever-changing views. At the same time, consideration has to be given to the selection of more hard-wearing materials, to the manner in which they will weather over the years, and to how the house itself will cope with the extremes of coastal conditions: salt-laden winds, driving rain and the occasional winter storm rolling in off the Channel.
